Dealing with Dry Skin in the Winter
Dry skin, particularly on my hands, is something I’ve had pretty much my whole life. Even as a child, come winter, my hands would be dull with visible dryness and make that rough sound when I rubbed my hands together. Umm, not your typical 8 year olds hands! As I matured, my skin has naturally gained more moisture (thank goodness!) and the dryness has become much more tolerable. However, let me tell ya, condo living is slowly but surely bringing back all my dry skin woes. Does anyone else find this?! With gusting gale force central air, most mornings I wake up feeling a tad (okay, totally) dehydrated. Ugh.
If there is one thing I have learned with years of dry skin it is that a good moisturizer is a life saver. This month I’ve been trying out the new shea butter line from Yves Rocher which is tailored specifically for ultra dry skin – perfect for these winter months! There are 3 products in the line. The Intense Hydrating Repair Balm is a super thick formula which is great for dry hands that are in need of a serious moisture kick. The Repair Lotion is a more light weight formula that I like to use on my legs and arms but also on my hands when they aren’t feeling like they totally need the thick repair balm. And third, the In Shower Comforting Balm is great for use all over and is used and washed off in the shower. It is super light weight and intended for restoring moisture in your skin after cleansing.
Each product in the line is made with shea butter as the primary ingredient which: (A) smells delicious and (B) has the properties to intensely nourish skin. This particular shea butter is sustainably sourced from Yves Rocher farms West Africa. This is all sounding good to me!
Finding a Balanced Nighttime Routine
With the harsh central air in the condo I have made moisturizing my hands and body a morning and nighttime ritual, just as I do with my face skin care routine. As tough as the winter can be on my skin, it offers me the gift of more time than I have during other parts of the year (wedding season takes it outta me, folks!). I’ve been taking a few extra minutes at the start and finish of each day to make sure I set myself up for a good night and day. Moisturizing my skin, drinking extra water, making and eating breakfast (no matter how much I hate it!), and going to sleep at a decent hour are all small practices I am making a bit of extra time for. Packaging all these practices up into a nighttime routine sets you up for a better nights sleep and a better morning which is in the end an overall better day.
- Prep breakfast
- drink a glass of water
- skin care routine – face and body (woop woop!)
- go to bed! (and hopefully it isn’t too late by this point!)
Easy, right? Let’s hope I can keep this going!!
I’ve talked about how much I dislike breakfast here on the blog before but also the importance it plays in your overall health and performance. This week I’ve been playing with overnight chia and oat recipes. I have shared one of my favourite breakfast recipes in this category on here before with the apple chia parfait. Overnight breakfasts are kind of genius. These are great for you if you are tight on time in the mornings, or, if like me, you hate breakfast and will look for bassssically any excuse not to eat it in the morning.
How to Make Overnight Chia Pudding
In a bowl prep the ingredients the night before or an hour or 2 before you plan to eat it.
Overnight Chia Recipe
- 2 tbs chia seeds
- 1/2 cup nut or coconut milk – I use almond
- 1 tbs maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Stir, cover, and refrigerate.
In the morning, dress up your chia – the best part! My favourite combo is some fresh fruit like raspberries and blueberries and something sweet and solid like granola and coconut flakes. Enjoy!
