Looking for a Healthy Snack? This Easy Hummus Recipe is For you!

For as long as I can remember hummus has been a snack time staple. The funny thing about it? I never actually really liked it. Honestly, I grew up liking all foods (well, all vegetarian foods)….or at least I convinced myself that I liked everything. It was a funny realization that I only had recently that I don’t actually HAVE to like all foods. And with this realization that I don’t actually like all foods, hummus quickly fell down the list.

However, my brother whipped up a batch of hummus for one of our Sunday lunches a couple of months ago and it kind of changed my (new) perception of hummus back to my old perception of hummus. Maybe…just maybe I actually do like hummus.

So, as it turns out (like with everything in my life :)), I only like really good hummus. And who can blame me right?! And you know who makes a really good hummus? You! This homemade hummus is the best! This easy hummus recipe is delicious and fool proof. If you have never made hummus before, fear not, by the end of this post you will know how to make hummus!

How to Make Homemade Pita Chips

First things first…A Recipe for Homemade Pita Chips

What is hummus without a good vehicle on which to enjoy it? Enter the pita chip! I love the freshness of homemade pita chips. They compliment this easy hummus recipe so so well. You can use pitas that have been previously frozen or fresh pitas to make these homemade pita chips. What makes these different from the rest is how you season them which is totally up to you! I chose to season mine with salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper (mostly because that’s all I had on hand…but it worked!).

To make Homemade Pita Chips:

Cut your pita into squares – mine were about 2″x2″. Coat a baking sheet in a thin layer of olive oil (or oil of your choice). Place your cut out pitas evenly on the baking sheet. Brush the tops of the pitas with oil as well and sprinkle on the seasonings of your choice. Bake in the oven at 350 until crispy. This will take about 10 minutes. They should be crispy and browning on the edges. If you remove them from the oven too early they will not crisp and rather be overly warmed, kinda chewy pitas 🙂

How to Make Hummus

Making hummus is very easy. In its most basic form the recipe only includes 5 ingredients (plus salt and pepper). With these 5 ingredients you can modify the recipe by adding additional ingredients to make new fun flavours of hummus. Included here first is a basic hummus recipe and below I have made a roasted red pepper hummus and a black olive hummus. So simple and so delicious!

How to Make Hummus…5 Simple Ingredients:

  • 1 can of drained chick peas
  • 4 heaping tablespoons tahini
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • salt and pepper to taste

To make hummus, combine the above ingredients in a food processor and pulse until combined. Once partially blended, blend on a higher speed to get a good and smooth hummus. This is how you make hummus! From here you can easily add additional ingredients to make it different flavours. Read below for how I made roasted red pepper hummus and delicious black olive hummus.

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

This roasted red pepper hummus is delicious and super flavourful. As I mentioned above, all hummus recipes start the same with the ingredients listed above. To make roasted red peppers you just add one ingredient. Can you guess it?! Yep…roasted red peppers!

Cut 1 red pepper into slices and roast in the oven with olive oil until soft and even blackened on parts. To make this recipe even more delicious I also roasted 3 cloves of garlic.

Once your peppers and garlic are roasted, add them to the food processor and begin the mixing and blending process. Easy peasy, right!?

Black Olive Hummus

This addition is even easier than the roasted red pepper hummus because this doesn’t even require any roasting! Although, I have to say that roasted garlic really adds to any hummus recipe. So, it is definitely something to consider adding to any and all hummus recipes!

To make black olive hummus, add 1/4 cup of black olives to the original hummus recipe before blending. Make sure to remove the pits first! Adding another solid item like olives may require a bit more oil and tahini to be added to the recipe if your mixture is coming out thicker than you would like. As an olive lover, this is my favourite hummus recipe!
